uncharted waters are navigable by little paper boats
[CHOREO 1 – waiting – movements of uncertainty – something to say…]
[sound weird sounds a tick tack.]
Scene 1
A NARRATOR BREATHING ON A Mic, A SOUND THAT REMINDS WIND… INVITING THE AUDIENCE TO JOIN.
A PAPER STARTS TO FLY ON THE FLOOR. SEEING IT, THEY PICK IT UP.
[CHOREO 2] FOLDING PAPER. SHE FOLDS INCORPORATING THE FOLDING INTO HER MOVEMENTS LIKE A DANCE.
ONCE IT IS IN A SHAPE OF A PAPER BOAT, THEY SHOWS IT BUT AT SAME TIME THE LIGHT BLINKS, AND THE BOAT DISAPPEARS IN HIS HANDS.
NARRATOR – This story did not begin when there were certainties.
[CHOREO 3] THE PAPER BOAT APPEARS ON THE NARRATOR’S BODY. AS THEY MOVE AND THE PAPER APPEARS AND DISAPPEARS IN A GAME OF MOVEMENT AND BREATH. UNTIL IT DISAPPEARS COMPLETELY.
Scene 2
NARRATOR – This story did not begin when there were certainties…
[CHOREO 4 – ENTRANCE.]
NARRATOR – Nor did it know the exact time when this story began, because time was silently sailing out of control.
[CHOREO 4 – CLAPPING-TIME SEQ + OUT OF CONTROL SEQ.]
NARRATOR – This story did not begin when there were certainties. AND… It felt as though the world had paused, and silence, like a fine mist, had settled over everything.
NARRATOR – In the beginning, where everything was nothing, the uncertainties were like an ocean…
ACTOR 2 – huge,
ACTOR 3 – vast,
ACTOR 4 – deep,
NARRATOR – unknown…
ALL – vuuuuuuuuuu
[sound of wind].
Scene 3
[CHOREO 5 – THE OCEAN APPEARS / PLAYING WITH THE MATERIAL / ARMS]
NARRATOR – Yet, within that immense void, something happened…
SOUND OF WIND IN EACH SENTENCE OF HER SPEECH.
[CHOREO 6 – REACTING TO TEXT]
NARRATOR – Looking into that enormity from an average distance of 384,000 kilometres away, at latitude 54° 21′ 20″ south and longitude 53° 15’ 00″ west. PLUS TWO DEGREES EAST… AND From a maximum stellar magnitude of 9,600 kilometres closer, one could see a paper boat!
ALL – A paper boat… drifting.
[CHOREO 7 B – PASSING PAPER PAPER BOAT]
Scene 4
NARRATOR – And without realising it, the beginning happened, like those unexpected things in life…
NARRATOR – …because to live is a story that transcends any warning.
FISH – Hey!
[CHOREO 8 – FISH ENTRANCE ]
NARRATOR – As glowing lights swirled around the little boat, something mysterious caught the boat’s eyes. Jumping side to side, laughing erratic…
[CHOREO 8 – FISH ]
FISH – Where are you going all alone in the middle of the sea? Are you going east? To the south? Are you going to see the spices of the Indies, are you going to sail the giant waves of the North Sea?
[CHOREO 8 – FISH ]
NARRATOR – (RESPONDING TO THE FISH) Even before this story began, this little boat had been sailing alone, completely lost, looking for a map….
FISH 2 – A map?!
FISH – Stupid little boat – to find his way back, just look at the footprints you left…
[CHOREO 8 – FISH EXIT]
BOAT – ‘But I’m in the middle of the sea, and the footprints left, they flee, dissolve in the blink of an eye…’
NARRATOR – (COMMENTING TO THE FISH) thought the little boat that didn’t speak.
SEAGULL – You should ask the wind…
Scene 5
[CHOREO 9 – THE SEAGULL ENTRANCE – Singing the …... WRAP YOUR TROUBLES AWAY]
NARRATOR – She was so bright in that dark night, so free in that wild twilight.
SEAGULL – When I’m lost, I let the wind take me away and, like an intuition, without realising, I’m gone.
[CHOREO 9c – SEA – NO ARMS CHOREOGRAPHY]
SEAGULL – We dream of flying but we fear heights. To fly you need to have the courage to face the wind. And the emptiness… and the void… and the terror… …and here and there and… Because it’s only in the void that the flight happens. Emptiness is the space of freedom, little boat! Like now, it’s time for me to go… goodbye!
[CHOREO 10 – The wave]
NARRATOR – And opening her wings fearlessly, as though to embrace the whole world, when she folded them the wind answered… vuuuuuuu…. Feather by feather, in one gentle movement, she opened her wings again and when she closed…. Vuuuuuuuuuuu… and a wave appeared… and another was near… she vanished, I fear!
BOAT – ‘It’s all so uncertain!’
Scene 6
[CHOREO 10 b – The waves]
NARRATOR – dreaded the little boat, but three other waves were already three metres long and… Vuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu….. Until the wind was no longer a wind it was a gale, and the gale was no longer a gale it was a typhoon. With huge waves, the sea was no longer sea, it was a seaquake that seemed to devour the little boat in one gulp. But before the butterflies were flying in his tummy, the boat began to sweep across that endless sea… big, mysterious, deep, unknown… vuuuuuuuuuu.
[CHOREO 10 c – The waves]
NARRATOR – The wind was heading north and the boat was sliding south…
ACTOR 2 – The wind was swirling high in the sky and the little boat fell high into the mouth’s sea…
ACTOR 3 – The wind twisted to the east and the little boat cut through the waves like an arrow, brave and straight .
[CHOREO 10 d – continues…]
NARRATOR – Between the wind and the sea, the little boat was no longer afraid, looking like a ballerina dancing on the waves. In that open sea, the waves were bigger than the big things that happen in life but he didn’t care, bobbing up and down like a dancer unaware of defying the laws of uncertainties.
[CHOREO 10 e – end – CONTACT/LIFTS]
Scene 7
NARRATOR – And that’s how, soon came soon gone, the wind swirled in the sky like a goodbye letting the sea calm down… But the little boat’s heart… drummed hardened!
[CHOREO 11 SOLO BOAT]
Scene 8
NARRATOR – When the silence was so immense that everything could be heard… And soon the sea wasn’t a sea… the sea was an alien place. Everything gloop, everything glap.
[ECHO SOUNDS]
NARRATOR – Everything then was a maybe. And maybe everything was a question without an answer.
[CHOREO 12 INTRO TO FLYING PLASTICS]
NARRATOR – It could be a boiling pot, it could be a bubble bath, it could be a water vine in an aquatic jungle, but in reality… it was fear.
[CHOREO 12 b FLYING PLASTICS + DISAPPEARING]
Scene 9
NARRATOR – Suddenly… neither forward nor backward, neither accelerating nor screaming. It was right there, in that place, neither here nor there… nowhere, anywhere… The little boat got stuck!
[CHOREO 13 dancers place anchor on the little boat + plus choreography of been held to move]
Scene 10
NARRATOR – Stalled, very still, it seemed that something held him in the middle of nowhere. Until it started to grow….
NARRATOR – growing….
ACTOR 2 – getting bigger… like…
ACTOR 3 – An island!
NARRATOR – …An Island?
NARRATOR – An island without wind? Without leaves? Without trees, without coconut water, without pirates, without cannibal natives?! It looks like an abandoned planet!
[CHOREO 14 intro to whale]
NARRATOR – The island made noise as if it were covered with rubble, the island wagged its tail as no island wags its tail. The Island opened its mouth like no island that ever had a mouth opened its mouth!!
[CHOREO 14 intro to whale solo]
NARRATOR – The island wasn’t an island, it was…
[CHOREO 14 Whale DUET]
NARRATOR – … in a second there they were, sailing around the world. Three laps precisely made in one day. From north to south, the little boat was introduced to all the emotions in the world…
Scene 11
NARRATOR – When silence came to feed the uncertainties of those who were alone. And his thoughts were full of currents going in opposite directions at the same time. And his heart was like the wind swirling through the air. Something magical happened…
[CHOREO 15 the falling stars SEQUENCE]
Scene 12
NARRATOR – Near the end that felt like a beginning, the little paper boat, making a caress in the sea, unfolded. And just like that, stretching like this… and unwinding like that and a bit like this… it opened wide flat. Until the little boat was no longer a boat, it had lost its boat shape, he was a just sheet of paper….
[CHOREO 6 unfolding bodies + plus a map is drawn n the paper]
NARRATOR – Astonished, he saw that he had a map drawn on his entire paper body this whole time! The topography of the entire universe, including measurements between the stars that if you fell asleep, you could easily dream from one to the other.
NARRATOR – It was such a detailed map that there were measurements done in colour,
Actor 2 – …places marked with irrational emotions,
Actor 3 – …crooked lines connecting proximities, and distance…
