The Poetics of Space

Led by Vinicius Salles

Join a three day residency exploring the creation of immersive, participatory, and atmospheric performance experiences. Drawing from the creative process behind The Shop for Mortals and All Fools, this residency invites participants to investigate how narrative, space, objects, and audience interaction can come together to create meaningful and transformative encounters.

Through task based improvisation, movement exploration, and sensory approaches to performance making, participants will explore the relationship between performer and audience, examining how participation, choice, and presence can shape the unfolding of a live experience. The residency will focus on creating intimate performance worlds where audiences become active contributors rather than passive observers.
Drawing from Vinicius Salles's fifteen years of experience working with Punchdrunk, alongside his extensive practice as a director, performer, and creator of immersive theatre, this residency offers practical insight into the construction of audience centred experiences. Participants will explore how space can become a dramaturgical partner, how narrative can emerge through interaction, and how performance can invite audiences into shared acts of imagination, responsibility, and play.

Suitable for performers, dancers, actors, theatre makers, and interdisciplinary artists, this residency is designed for those interested in immersive theatre, participatory performance, and expanding their creative practice. Expect a challenging, supportive, and highly collaborative process that encourages experimentation, risk taking, reflection, and discovery.
Throughout the residency, participants will investigate how text, movement, objects, and spatial composition can generate narrative, and how the presence, choices, and dialogue of others within the performance space can complete and transform the experience.
